It is commonly believed that black molds are bad. The truth is NOT all black molds are bad. Yes, a few years ago, a type of black mold called Stachybotrys had made the news by causing much ill effect on human health. However, there are many other molds that look black but are harmless.
Likewise, some white molds are just as hazardous. So the color of the mold is insignificant when it comes to measuring its harmfulness against our health. Actually a mold’s color is given by the spores it produces. Hence, mold can be green, blue or orange for instance.
Some people say mold should be removed by scrubbing the surface with bleach. But generally speaking, bleach is not good to be used as mold killer. One, because bleach is damaging to human health. Two, bleach is water-based solution, which means once water penetrates the surface it will provide more moisture for the mold to grow again.
Therefore, in the small cases of home mold removal treatment, ordinary household detergent is enough to do the trick. Just make sure the treated areas dry quickly within 24 – 48 hours so that molds don’t stand a chance to grow back again.
